Haiti Relief

No doubt by know everyone is aware of the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti. The sheer magnitude of the castastrophe that has befallen one of the poorest countries in the western hemishere is almost beyond comprehension. It has been said that tragedy brings the best out of people. The quick response by various countries, agencies, and individuals is reassuring, but the task is huge. We at Senator Gershaw would like to do our small part to raise funds to help. As such we are proposing the following actions:

1. Every Monday the Student Council sells suckers as a fundraiser. All proceeds from January 18th sale will be donated to Haiti.

2. Caps For Causes Day is held monthly. Students and staff are alllowed to wear a hat with a donation of a loonie to a designated charity. This month we will do something different. The charity is the Haiti Relief Fund. However, we will run Caps For Causes Tuesday(Jan. 19) through Friday(Jan. 22) this week. This gives everyone the opportunity to wear a hat with a donation of $1 each day.

3. Around the school we have many recycling containers. Students are encouraged to make sure they recycle their bottles, cans, juice boxes, and milk containers in the proper containers at the school. All proceeds from this week's recyclables will be donated to Haiti. In addition to this, we will also accept donations of recyclable bottles and cans at the school. We ask that any donations be brought to the school by Friday, January 22nd.

4. We also have a collection jar set up at in the office to accept cash donations.

At the present time we are still unsure to which organization will get our donation. However, we are looking for an agency where we can get matching dollars from the government.

We thank you in advance for your support!
